Eskom load-shedding has become prevalent over the past few weeks and will remain in place for an unknown time period. Load Shedding has become a means to mitigate the potential disruption of national power by effectively managing the power system throughout the country.

Eskom’s National Control Centre, with the assistance of Municipality Control Rooms, plan scheduled switch-offs in specific districts according to the state of impact. The objective is to lower demand to match the strained supply, thereby protecting the national power system from a total blackout.

Mobile data Networks (Vodacom, Telkom, MTN) LTE base stations and Fiber distribution points are protected by battery stacks, and network aggregation high sites predominantly have additional alternative power sources such as static generators, solar or wind power solutions. All core facilities are protected by multiple power sources such as UPS and groups of Generators. In certain instances, mobile generators are also deployed to non-aggregation high sites affected by power related faults.
